Living Skills 7

7th grade Living Skills is a twelve week Related Arts course that is offered to all 7th grade students.  A hands-on approach to learning is taken, as well as student and teacher involvement in all discussions, lectures, completion of class handouts and demonstrations.  This Related Arts Program will utilize a majority of materials from the most recent version of the Today’s Teen text and program. The students will be expected to complete various activities within each unit.  Students will be able to manage essential everyday life skills after acquiring the necessary abilities and techniques from this course.

The two major components within the 12 week program are:  Foods and Nutrition; and Sewing.  The Foods unit will provide students with updated information and guidelines for nutrition, good health, meal planning, decision making, peer interaction and food preparation.  Products prepared by students will be evaluated and the food’s lab experience will allow students to become health conscious, productive and efficient.

The second component within this course focuses on the area of sewing, clothing design and construction.  The basics of fabric care and selection, equipment, machine safety, parts, and functions will be emphasized.  The importance of reading skills and following directions will be specified.  Evaluation will take place upon completion of an individual class project.  In addition to the two major components, time is spent addressing adolescent growth and development.
