Language Arts 7

Required of all Seventh Grade students

This course is designed to help students improve their skills in the five areas of languages arts: reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing.  Students will read and analyze several genres of literature including both fiction and nonfiction.  Emphasis will be on mysteries, autobiographies/biographies, and myths/legends.  Sources will be novels, class textbook, and other reading materials.

Students will also become more proficient writers through practice.  They will write a variety of compositions using appropriate grammar and vocabulary.  Compositions will include a research paper (in collaboration with social studies teachers), autobiographical pieces, and original stories.  The Collins Writing Program, a content-focused writing system, will be the guide.

Class time will be given, to work on assigned writings.  If a student is absent or does not use class time wisely work will need to be finished at home.  Some students like to put in extra effort and will also need time at home to work.  Library access is also given at least once a week.

Grammar will be taught from the text, as well as by using the Daily Oral Language program (DOL).  Speaking, listening, and viewing skills will be strengthened through group work, oral presentations, and comparing classroom materials with alternate media.

Instruction is usually guided in whole group, small group, or individual formats using lecture, modeling, and independent practice.  Grades will be compiled from completed writing assignments, projects, tests, quizzes, and Accelerated Reader points.

Students are expected to complete assignments on time, participate in class, and come to class prepared.  Extra writing and reading outside the classroom is encouraged and will help students be more successful.
