-Describe the four basic characteristics of a state, outline the four most influential theories of the origins of the state, and explain the purposes for which government exists.

Read pages 2-8.

-Complete Chapter 1, Section 1 review questions on page 8 and complete the review sheet for section 1.

Objectives:

-Describe the characteristics of unitary, federal, and confederate governments, describe how presidential & parliamentary governments differ, and examine how a dictatorship and a democracy differ. 

-Chapter 1, Section 2 covering pages 10-14.  Answer questions on page 14 and complete the Section 2 Review Sheet.
