Algebra 1 Syllabus

1. Regular ATTENDANCE is essential because the learning of mathematics is a building process.  MAKE-UP work is the responsibility of the STUDENT.  Work must be handed in on the second day after returning from and excused absence.  For longer absences, discuss a due date with me.  Unexcused absences and tardies will result in a zero for the day.

2. HOMEWORK should be kept up to date for optimum learning.  I do not grade papers according to the number correct on each assignment, but rather on whether you have made a sincere effort to work each problem and your success on these attempts.  Homework is to be done in pencil.  Late homework WILL NOT be accepted.

3. A NOTEBOOK should be kept with material kept in an organized, logical manner.

4. TEST and QUIZZES will be given throughout each marking period.  Test will complete each chapter and will be announced well in advance.  Quizzes may be given at any time.

5. SUPPLIES are the responsibility of the STUDENT.  You will be expected to be in you seat with the required book, pencil, and notebook WHEN THE BELL RINGS.  No passes will be issued for forgetful students.

6. If you need EXTRA HELP on any assignment see me either before school, during lunch hour, during my prep hour, during my professional hour, or after school.  I will be glad to help any student who had made a sincere effort on any problem.

7. GRADES are determined by a percentage of the TOTAL POINTS possible in the marking period, by the table below:

94-100%           A                                             73-76%             C

90-93%             A-                                            70-72%             C-

9. CLASS ORGANIZATION
a. Answer questions on homework
You may work on other problems as long as you’re quiet and not distracting me or other students.
b. Presentation of new material
I will generally cover new concepts on the chalkboard or overhead.  It needs to be especially quiet during this time so others have a sound chance of understanding the new material.
c. Time will be given to work on assignments and/or finish explanation of new material.
On assignments you may work together as long as you remain relatively quiet.  During this time, I will walk around the room and assist students encountering difficulties.
