Chapter 5 Vocabulary
Amino Acid Ð Any one of 20 different organic molecules tht contain a carboxyl group and that combine to form proteins
Bond Angle Ð the angle formed
by two bonds to the same atom.
Carbohydrate Ð any organic compound that is made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen and provides nutrients to cells of living things.
Chemical structure Ð The
arrangement of atoms in a substance
Covalent bond Ð a bond formed
when atoms share one or more pairs of electrons
Empirical formula Ð the
composition of a compound in terms of the relative numbers and kinds of atoms
in the simplest ratio.
Ionic bond Ð A bond formed by
the attraction between oppositely charged ions
Metallic bond - a bond formed by the attraction between
positively charged metal and the electrons around them.
Molecular formula Ð a
chemical formula that slows the number and kind of atoms in a molecule, but not
the arrangement of the atoms
Organic compound Ð A covalent
bonded compound that contains carbon, excluding carbonates and oxides
Polyatomic Ion Ð An ion made
up of two or more atoms
Polymer Ð a large molecule that
is formed by more than five monomers or small units
Protein- an organic compound
that is made of amino acids and is the principal component of all cells
