Chapter 3 Vocabulary

States of Matter

Archimedes Principle – The principle that states the buoyant force of an object in a fluid is an upward force equal to the weight of the volume of fluid that the object displaces

Boyles Law – States that for a fixed amount of gas at constant temperature, the volume of gas increases as the pressure decreases and the volume of gas decreases as the pressure increases.

Charles Law- States that for a fixed amount of gas at a constant pressure, the volume of gas increases as the temperature increases and the volume of gas decreases as the temperature decreases.

Condensation – The change of a substance form a gas to a liquid

Energy – Capacity to do work

Evaporation The change of a substance from a liquid to a gas

Pascal – The SI unit of pressure; equal to the force of 1 Newton exerted over an area of 1meter squared.

Pascal’s Principle-The principle states that a fluid in equilibrium contained in vessel exerts a pressure equal in intensity in all directions

Plasma – A state of matter that starts as a gas and then becomes ionized

Pressure – The amount of force exerted per unit of a surface

Sublimation – The process in which a solid changes directly into a gas

Thermal energy – The kinetic energy of a substance’s atoms
