Sound Waves - Transverse

Items needed:

rope about the length of a single person jump rope or jump rope

stop watch - if no watch is advailable have a students count the numbers out slowly for time.

Procedure

One student is to hold the end of the jump rope motionless the student on the ohter end is to shake the rope to make it vibrate with one segment like below.

A third student should count the number of vibrations the rope makes in a 10 second interval, another student could time the event and if yu need another student could record the frequency of the wave.

Make another wave with two segments to it like below. this is one full wave length. to do theis the rope will have to be moved twice as fast. Each part of the rope will move in opposite directions. See diagram below.

Count the number of vibrations the rope makes in a 10 second interval

Try to make three segments to the wave. You will need to move the ropel back and forth three times as fast as the first time to do this.

Draw a picture of each wave .

How many transverse waves are there in each picture.

A. .5 wave

B. 1 wave

C. 1.5 wave
