HOMOGENOUS - Describes a sample of matter that has uniform characteristics throughout.

 

HETEROGENOUS - Describes a sample of matter that has parts with different compositions.

 

ATOM - The smallest particle of an element that can enter into a chemical change. It consists on a central nucleus and electron clouds outside the nucleus.

 

MOLECULE - The smallest particle of a covalent substance that can exist free and still have the compositionand properties of that substance.

 

ELEMENT - A substance that cannot be decomposed into simpler substances by ordinary means.

 

COMPOUND - A substance of definite composition which may be decomposed into two or more simpler substances by chemical change.

 

MIXTURE - An association of two or more substances that are not chemically combined.

 

SUBSTANCE - A sample of matter, all parts of which have one set of identifying properties.
