Academy Information The requirements and expectations for Military Academies vary greatly. The structure of an academy is very different than that of a civilian college. From the day you enter the academy, you are pursing a college education and preparing for a career. Upon graduation from the academy, as an officer, there is a five year military commitment for most branches. There are no tuition payments and cadets receive a stipend of over $700 per month. Below is a summary of the key points for each branch of service: Air Force Academy: Congressional Nomination Required United States Military Academy (West Point): Congressional Nomination Required Naval Academy: Congressional Nomination Required Coast Guard Academy: Under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. No nomination required. Merchant Marine Academy: Congressional Nomination Required. Funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Mission: To educate and train students who can serve as competent shipboard deck officers, while preparing them for positions of increasing responsibility and leadership in the maritime and intermodal transportation industries.
