Kingsford High School students participated in the Youth Asset Summit held on November 6th, 2007 at the Bay West Campus. The purpose of the summit was to review the student survey results for our area, taken last May, covering the 40 Developmental Assets. Research shows that the higher the number of assets a student possesses, the higher the student success rate is as well as a lower number of risk taking behaviors that a student engages in. This group was selected as influential leaders for their school and targeted to brainstorm ideas to help their peers obtain more of these assets.

One major outcome from this session was the creation of a new group at Kingsford High School, referred to as KHS-Outreach, supervised by Ms. Nancy Jayne. This group is open to all Kingsford High School students and the mission of the group is to actively seek and create volunteer opportunities for the student body. The group felt that one of the assets which we had a low score in, #7 Community Values Youth, could be impacted through more positive exposure in the local area. Local agencies as well as individuals are encouraged to contact Nancy Jayne with any volunteer opportunities or ideas. She can be reached at njayne@Kingsford.org or in the Counseling Office at the high school 779-2670 ext 4.
