KHS STUDENT NOMINATED TO COMPETE IN NATIONAL AWARD PROGRAM

Derek Kruppstadt, a Kingsford High School senior, has been nominated to compete in the national Principal’s Leaders Award (PLS) scholarship program, sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School principals (NASSP).  Herff Jones, Inc., funds the PLA program.

Robert Usitalo, principal of Kingsford High School, today announced the nomination that places Kruppstadt in the national competition.  One hundred national PLA winners will be chosen this spring to receive a college scholarship ranging from $1,000 to $12,000.  Mr. Usitalo says about Derek, “Derek has shown qualities necessary for leadership.  He has the drive and willingness to contribute time and effort for the betterment of individuals, his school and community.”

High school principals from across the country were able to nominate one of their student leaders.  Nominees were selected based on their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience and academic record.  They were also required to write an essay.

“Every year the nominees for the Principal’s Leadership Award are just phenomenal and Derek is no different,” said Gerald N. Tirozzi, executive director, NASSP.  He is an excellent example of what a true student leader embodies and deserves to be commended for his excellence in the classroom and community.”

In recognizing leadership in co-curricular activities as well as academic performance, the PLA scholarship recognizes the importance of a well-rounded education.  Co-curricular activities are an essential part of the school curriculum.

While at Kingsford High School, Derek has been a class officer, involved in Drama Club and High School Bowl.  He is also involved in KHS Concert Chorale, S.A.Y. soccer league.  He has had a “B” average or better for five consecutive semesters, attained a 4 on AP Calculus exam, and received the highest level on Michigan Promise Award.  He has been very involved in Our Saviour's Lutheran Church teaching Sunday School, attending leadership school and being involved in a mission trip.  In addition he holds a part-time job.  Derek is the son of Adam and Christine Kruppstadt.
