The purpose of the S.O.S. desk is to support teachers with technology in the classroom. This can involve all aspects of using computers including help with software, printing, scanning, presentations and setting up projection equipment. Students who participate in the S.O.S. program will get real life experience as a Computer Technician, Troubleshooter and Instructor of Technology. They will also have the opportunity to expand their own knowledge of computers and become technology leaders in the school and community.
Mobile Wireless Computer Lab Support: The SOS Students will provide assistance to classroom teachers with the Mobile Wireless Computer Lab. The student will be responsible for scheduling the wireless lab, making sure the batteries are fully charged and that they are in good working order. They will also assist students in using the computers.
Help Teachers with Software Applications: Ideally there will be one student per hour that will staff the computer help desk. A student will be available to assist teachers on a one-to-one basis in software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Publisher and Front Page. S.O.S. will also scan printed material for teachers into a useable electronic format that can be inserted into documents, presentations and web pages.
Provide Assistance to Teachers and Classes in the Media Center Computer Lab: At Kingsford High School, we have a full computer lab that teachers reserve for with their classes. S.O.S. will assist students in the Media Center Computer Lab who have trouble logging on to the computers, using software and effectively using the Internet for research.
E-Learning: The S.O.S. Student will assist in facilitating E-Learning. At Kingsford High School we will subscribe to Michigan Virtual High School which involves students taking on-line courses through the Internet.
